They are recognized within their Magnet organization for their inspiring and motivating leadership style and strategic outcomes achievement. This accessible individual is a role model for leadership within the organization, applying principles of change and provides the support needed for innovation to flourish.

 

Required Criteria for Nominations

  • Nominees for Magnet Excellence in Transformational Leadership may include nurses who are primarily in nurse manager, AVP/Director, or other innovative leadership roles.
  • Must include active work with at least one outcome that has occurred within the last year (July – June).

 

This Nurse Leader is a Transformational Leader who:

  • Promotes and influences nursing and organizational strategic priorities through advocacy, resources and leadership.
  • Is visible, accessible and inspires a shared vision.
  • Demonstrates active partnership with clinical nurses to improve the practice environment, clinical practice and patient experience.
  • Values and supports the growth and development of rising leaders.
  • Serves as a mentor and provides leadership and effective guidance during times of planned and unplanned change.

 

Structural Empowerment

This exceptional nurse demonstrates the highest level of professional practice. They embody the spirit of shared decision making and understand the power of collaboration within the organization and external to the organization. This individual relentlessly supports structures and processes that promote lifelong learning.

 

Required Criteria for Nominations

  • Nominees for Magnet Excellence in Structural Empowerment may include nurses at any level in the organization.
  • Must include active work with at least one outcome that has occurred within the last year (July – June).

 

This nurse embodies structural empowerment through the following:

  • Promotes and participates in shared decision making structures that engage nurses at all levels and all settings.
  • Actively contributes in professional organizations to further the work of professional nurses.
  • Empowers and role models continuous learning, growth and development for self and nurses at all career stages.
  • Fosters collaboration and partnership with the community to ensure healthcare outreach.
  • Encourages recognition of nurses for and interprofessional groups whose work addresses strategic priorities.

 

Exemplary Professional Practice

They are role models who represent the value of the organization’s professional practice model. This nurse promotes individual and organizational autonomy of nursing and recognizes the importance of interprofessional collaboration across the continuum of care.

  • Role models interprofessional collaboration that enables outcomes improvement and coordination of care.
  • Promotes structures and processes that enable patient engagement in their care to improve outcomes and patient experience.
  • Engage in activities that improve the nursing practice environment.

 

New Knowledge, Innovations, and Improvements

This exceptional nurse demonstrates the highest level of professional practice. This nurse cultivates an environment of inquiry where evidence based practice and research thrive.

 

Required Criteria for Nominations

  • The nominee is employed by a Virginia Magnet Consortium hospital.
  • A professional nurse colleague must submit the primary nomination.
  • Nominees for Magnet Excellence in New Knowledge, Innovations and Improvements may include clinical nurses from any practice setting.

 

This nurse demonstrates commitment to promoting new knowledge and innovations through the following:

  • Role models use of evidence based practice processes that generate new knowledge and learnings through dissemination.
  • Evaluate and incorporate the resources provided by professional organizations and specialty guidelines.
  • Encourages and promotes innovation and creative problem solving.
  • Embraces technology to advance clinical improvements and patient experience.
  • Fosters nurse participation in workflow and work environment improvements.

 

Empirical Outcomes

This exceptional nurse demonstrates the highest level of professional practice. This nurse generates improved outcomes through leveraging structures and processes that enable nurses to contribute meaningfully in the practice environment.
